ITALY – CONI PAYS TRIBUTE TO FALLEN OF GREAT WAR IN REDIPUGLIA

The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) pays homage to the fallen of the Great War today 11 June, on occasion of the 100th anniversary from the end of the conflict.
For this important historic occurrence, CONI President Giovanni Malagò wanted with him EOC President Janez Kocijancic and EOC Secretary General Raffaele Pagnozzi, as a sign of respect and solidarity towards over 10,000 soldiers of different nationalities who are buried at the Austro-Hungarian Military Cemetery. The Cemetery houses the remains of 2,550 known and 12,000 unknown victims and was also visited in 2014 by His Holiness Pope Francesco who stopped there in prayer.
It is the first time in history that a CONI President attends such a commemorative event and an official ceremony has been indeed organised. For the occasion, some CONI Olympians from Region Friuli Venezia Giulia will depose a crown of flowers at the Memorial Monumentum of Redipuglia, as a gesture of brotherhood and peace.
On the following day, also for the first time, CONI Executive Board will meet at the Municipality Hall of Trieste. Apart from administrative issues, such as the Statutes and sports legal affairs, the composition of the National Team featuring at the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona (SPA), 21 June – 1 July will be finalised.
