LATVIA – SPORT, YOUTH AND SCHOOL AT THE CORE OF THE NOC’S MISSION
16 May 2018
The Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK) has shown during this entire year a very special commitment to involve youngsters in a sport and healthy life style.
The NOC understood the importance of dovetailing three main pillars of our Society: Sport, Youth and School.
“Sport in class” is one of the project put in place by LOK, involving 230 classes from all over the country and bringing together more than 5,200 children. The finals of the 4th season of the project took place today, 16 May at the “Zemgale Olympic Center” in Jelgava, Latvia, where the students had general physical fitness tests, as well as participated in sport competitions.
The NOC implemented, together with the Latvian Mobile Telephone (LTM) company, another very interesting initiative to reveal how daily training and physical activity help sleep better and wake up more easily in the morning. 37 Latvian children were undergone a test: during one year they wore an LTM device which registered their daily physical activity, as well as their sleeping hours. They also answered questionnaires on their habits, daily routine and use of computer. The results shown that children who spend more time in practicing sport sleep better and manage to rest in less time.
“I am delighted that our projects continue to make timely progress and the use of modern technology help us in this sense. A good quality sleeping and rest are essential, and constant exercising and high-intensive physical activity valuably improve them”, LOK Secretary General Georges Tikmers noted.
