For Spyros Capralos, President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, picking the highlight of the past 50 years was a no-brainer: The successful staging of the Olympic Games Athens 2004. “It was a huge achievement for Greece, as it was the first time in recent times that such a small country organised Olympic Games with great success,” he says.

The highlight of the past 50 years was the organization of the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. It was a huge achievement for Greece, as it was the first time in recent times that such a small country, organized Olympic Games with great success.

It is not by chance that Jacques Rogge, who was then President of the IOC, stated that Greece organized “Dream Games”. Almost all Greeks, with passion, determination and above all solidarity, showed unique abilities that resulted in a successful completion of an extremely complex organizational project.

The 2004 Olympic Games, in addition to the organizational success, created a great legacy for the country. New roads and a new metro system were built, the city got a new airport, and all infrastructures were modernized.

Consequently, the look of the Greek capital radically changed and above all the life of its inhabitants was improved for the better.
