CZECH REPUBLIC – ‘THE NAGANO TAPES’ DOCUMENTARY RECOGNISED AT 2018 CZECH FILM CRITICS’ AWARDS

An Olympic Channel documentary called “The Nagano Tapes: Rewound, Replayed & Reviewed” was recognised at the 2018 Czech Film Critics’ Awards in Prague on 2 February. The documentary, which was produced in 2017 in cooperation with the Czech Olympic Committee, depicts the Czech men’s ice hockey team winning gold at the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games. These were the first Games featuring National Hockey League (NHL) players.

Unlike during previous Olympic Games, in 1998 the NHL took a 17-day break to enable national teams to use their best talent. However, neither the United States nor Canada won a medal, while the Czech Republic beat Russia 1-0 in the final.

Directed by Ondřej Hudeček, the film claimed the non-cinema award at the Czech Film Critics’ Awards, with the prize being presented at a gala event at the Archa Theatre in Prague. The film has received widely positive reviews thus far, including a mark of 9.4 out of 10 from the Internet Movie Database.

During the film, several of the key people involved in the 1998 victory look back on the performance, including goaltender Dominik Hašek, Jaromír Jágr and scorer of the winning goal Petr Svoboda.
