President Capralos highlights strong relationship with FIBA at Central Board meeting

EOC President Spyros Capralos attended the FIBA Central Board meeting in Berlin, Germany on 21 April, highlighting the strong collaboration between the two organisations.

3×3 basketball was among the sports to feature at the 1st European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2015, and has since established itself as a valued addition to the Olympic programme.

It will form part of the programme for the 4th European Games in Istanbul, Türkiye in 2027.

President Capralos expressed his gratitude to FIBA for his invitation to the FIBA Central Board meeting and the ongoing commitment of both organisations to developing sport in Europe.

“The relationship between the EOC and FIBA, particularly FIBA Europe, is of great value,” President Capralos said.

“FIBA, whether through traditional baseball or 3×3, has been present at the European Youth Olympic Festivals for many years. And 3×3 has grown to be a big attraction at the European Games.

“I have no doubt that it will be one of the stars of the 4th European Games Istanbul 2027.”

During the FIBA Central Board meeting, President Capralos also underlined the EOC’s commitment to defending the European Sport Model.

He added: “The European Sport Model is the foundation on which sustainable European and even global sport has been built. They are foundations of solidarity, providing a framework that connects elite competition to the grassroots.

“The EOC is a strong supporter of the European Sport Model, and along with our colleagues at the EOC EU Office, we will continue to vigorously defend it.”
