Vuokatti 2021 – CoCom pleased with second visit to next Winter EYOF host

31 October 2019

The EOC Coordination Commission (CoCom) visited Vuokatti, Finland on 22 October 2019.

The EOC representatives, led by Chair Florin Misca, heard about the initial work of the Organising Committee on different areas, including accommodation and sport venues. In particular, the group was very impressed by the readiness of the facilities.

“We found that progress has been made and the activities are carried out according to the masterplan,” Misca said. “The CoCom proposed many recommendations that were accepted by the Organising Committee. However, I must say that Vuokatti already has most of the ingredients to organise a successful EYOF.”

The Athletes’ village is located in the centre of the Vuokatti Sports Complex and all competition venues are walking distance, except for ice hockey, which will be held in Kajaani.

The 15th Winter EYOF is set to take place from 6-13 February 2021 and won’t be the first EOC sports event organised in Finland. The former European Youth Olympic Days (EYOD) took place in Vuokatti in 2001.

7 are the sports on the programme: alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey (both for boys and girls), short track, snowboarding.

“We are very pleased that, for the first time in EYOF’s history, ice hockey will be also for girls, with six European NOCs competing in the event. This means that all sports competitions will be for both male and female athletes, making this EYOF perfectly gender balanced,” EOC Peter Brull said.

The next CoCom visit is scheduled in mid-March 2020 and will focus on the venues and ceremonies.
