WINTER PIOTR NUROWSKI PRIZE – MEET CZECH FREESTYLE SKIER MATEJ SVANCER
5 November 2020
The nomination for the 2020 Winter Piotr Nurowski “Best European Young Athlete” Prize follows a dream season for 16-year-old freestyle skier Matej Svancer.
Matej moved to Austria with his family to be closer to the Alps, and over the past few years his passion for skiing evolved from alpine to freestyle. The switch paid off and Matej saw a dream come true when he was crowned “Big Air” Champion at the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020.
“If I won this prize, it would prove that over the last three years I gave it my best shot at bringing my freestyle skiing to a professional level. It would also allow me to show other young athletes that this sport is cool and they should try it out!”
Among his many other achievements, Matej earned a 4th-place finish in the Big Air event at the 2019 FIS Freestyle Junior World Ski Championships in Klaeppen (SWE).
His motto is “Enjoy the sport and work hard to be the best.”
