2012 OLYMPICS : OLYMPIC TORCH DESIGN UNVEILED

London, June 8th – The London 2012 Organizing Committee (LOCOG) today unveiled a prototype of the London 2012 Olympic Torch that will carry the Olympia Flame into the UK capital next summer.

The torch,  one of the most lightweight in the history of the Olympic Movement, was unveiled by London 2012 Chairman Seb Coe and the designers of the torch, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, along with Olympians Denise Williams and Jonathan Edwards.

At 800mm high and weighing just 800g, the Torch is. Its gold-colored form is perforated by 8,000 small cut-out circles, representing the 8,000 Torchbearers and their stories of personal achievement. The triangular design has been inspired by the multiples of three identified across the vision and delivery of the Olympic Games. These include the three Olympic Values of respect, excellence and friendship; the fact the UK has hosted the Olympic Games three times; and the vision for the London 2012 Olympic Games to combine three strands of work sport, education and culture.

The torch will land in UK next May 2012 et run throughout the country for 70 -day relay.
