Cyprus’ Georgios Angonas triumphed in today’s artistic gymnastics Men’s Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar event at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) in Andorra, doubling his gold medal tally to four.
Angonas won yesterday’s Men’s All Around event and helped Cyprus to Men’s Team gold at the Centre Esportiu Serradells, and he continued his winning form on day two of the GSSE.
He scored 12.633 to beat compatriot Michalis Isaias to win the Parallel Bars event, and later notched 12.733 on the Horizontal Bar for his second gold of the day and an impressive fourth of the Games.
After helping Malta to Women’s Team gold and winning individual All-Around silver yesterday, Sophie St John also won two gold medals today with scores of 12.550 in the Women’s Vault and 12.900 in the Women’s Balance Beam.
Michalis Chari and Kyriakos Markidis won additional artistic gymnastics golds for Cyprus in the Men’s Rings and Men’s Vault respectively, while Iceland earned three golds through Jonas Ingi Thorisson in the Men’s Floor Exercise, Þóranna Sveinsdottir in the Women’s Uneven Bars and Nanna Gudmundsdottir in the Women’s Floor Exercise.
Monaco’s Hugo Villeneuve was the other artistic gymnastics gold medallist in the Men’s Pommel Horse.
There was a Trap Shooting double for San Marino at the Camp de tir del Pla de Borras as Alessandra Perilli won the Women’s event and Gian Marco Berti triumphed in the Men’s.
Two entertaining table tennis finals resulted in two golds for Luxembourg, with Luka Mladenovic overcoming Felix Wetzel of Malta in the Men’s Singles, and Sarah De Nutte beating another Maltese player in Maria-Carmelia Iacob in the Women’s Singles.
Today’s results kept Cyprus at the top of the medal table with 17 golds, 16 silvers and 23 bronzes, but Luxembourg and Iceland closed the gap with 15 golds each.
