Viviana Márton produced one of the shocks of Paris 2024 when she beat Serbia’s Aleksandra Perišić to win the Olympic gold medal in the women’s -67kg category.
It was Hungary’s first-ever Olympic taekwondo medal and saw her beat two-time Olympic bronze medallist Ruth Gbagbi and Belgium’s 2022 world champion Sarah Chaari, a former Piotr Nurowski Prize finalist, en-route to the final.
Márton said: “It’s very important for me and for my country, for Hungary, because it’s the first medal in taekwondo. I hope there’ll be more taekwondo players, girls and boys.
“My dream was always to become an Olympic champion. I declared this ambition before I turned 10 years old and this nomination is a great honour for me.”
