Olympic Committee of Israel launch scholarship in memory of Olympic broadcasting pioneer Alex Gilady

The Olympic Committee of Israel (OCI) and Keshet Broadcasting have launched a new scholarship in memory of Olympic broadcasting legend Alex Gilady, one year on from his passing.

Gilady was an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member from 1994 until his untimely death in April 2022 and was one of the founders of Keshet Media Group, as well as Vice President of Sports for the NBC network in the United States.

To commemorate his exceptional career in broadcasting, the OCI and Keshet have developed an Excellence Scholarship in sports communication, which will help the development of sports media professionals, as well as encouraging excellence and professionalism in the field.

The scholarship will be awarded in two rounds, one this year in preparation for the Olympic Games Paris 2024, and the second in 2025 in ahead of the Olympic Winter Games in Milan-Cortina in 2026.

OCI President Yael Arad said: “Just as athletes strive to be the best and conquer professional summits, so sports journalists strive to reach the top in their field. Alex Gilady conquered every professional summit and always promoted and supported the dreams of the younger generation of journalists.

“At the Olympic Committee of Israel, we are proud to join the Keshet Media Group and to work alongside media giants such as NBC and the IOC Olympic Channel to continue cultivating Olympic sports media in Israel.”

During his career, Gilady was an innovative presence in television productions and in Olympic sports in particular. After starting his career working on both sports and news broadcasts in Israel, Gilady moved to American network NBC and was named as the company’s Vice President of Sport.

Gilady was also an active IOC Member and a member of the Coordination Commissions for the Olympic Games in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 prior to his death at the age of 79.
